The Cross River State Teachers Continuous Training Institute (TCTI), Biase, has concluded a significant two-day residential workshop, equipping 150 primary school teachers with essential Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills. The training, which ran from June 19 to 20, 2025, is a key part of TCTI’s ongoing commitment to integrate modern methodologies and intensify teaching and learning across the state’s primary education system.

The workshop, titled “Effective Methods of Teaching Foundational Science in Primary Schools,” focused on boosting teachers’ proficiency in modern IT strategies, specifically the application of AI to improve teaching outcomes. The first day featured various presentations, followed by practical teaching sessions led by expert resource persons on the second day.

Professor Taoheed Adedoja, Director-General of the TCTI, emphasized the critical role of continuous teacher training in educational curriculum development. He highlighted the Cross River State government’s dedication to providing educators with advanced digital, data-driven and pedagogical skills to elevate the classroom experience.

Professor Adedoja affirmed that TCTI’s state-of-the-art facilities ensure educators remain abreast of the latest teaching innovations and global practices, solidifying its reputation as a leading teacher training hub in Nigeria.

“Primary school teachers are the gateways to the right education for every child,” Professor Adedoja stated. “Of all education systems in the country, the primary schools’ curriculum and the teachers to deliver it should be topmost in Nigeria’s education structure. Introducing the concept of AI to primary schools will further expose our teachers to cutting-edge tools, because in Cross River State we want the best for our children.” Adedoja added that participants showed great enthusiasm for integrating AI concepts into primary education, particularly those from rural areas.

Teachers who participated in the training lauded its transformative impact. Adie John Akomaye of Government Nomadic Primary School, Obudu, noted that the training introduced “indoor and outdoor approaches to the teaching of elementary science.” He added that, “Science is seen as everything man does in an attempt to understand the workings in nature so as to live in comfort, consciously and in harmony with the environment. The attempt here has been to draw attention to constructive approaches in basic sciences.”

Mrs. Eleng Eleng Ebono from Comprehensive Primary School, Igbo-Imabana, Abi Local Government Area, shared her breakthrough: “I used to think that Artificial Intelligence is only applicable to robots, but from the lectures delivered, it has shown that I can use my mobile phone to access AI. This workshop is an eye-opener for all primary school teachers in changing classroom narratives, making teaching easier, simpler and concise.”

Mr. Obo Okon Benjamin of Salvation Army Primary School, Goldie Road, Calabar, also acknowledged the training’s impact. “Education is the bedrock of every nation and the primary school teacher is the foundation upon which a child begins,” he remarked. “This training has gone a long way to widen the knowledge of primary school teachers on effective learning through the application of Artificial Intelligence. We have learned different methods of lesson delivery which help to save time, expand the scope of knowledge and much more. This workshop has indeed opened the space for different digital tools and platforms to enhance the teaching and learning of reading, writing and mathematical skills in primary education.” Teacher Benjamin concluded by extending gratitude to the TCTI management and ICT staff.

Beneficiaries universally applauded the training, recognizing its immense value and effectiveness in enhancing learning outcomes. This workshop, benefiting 150 primary school teachers, is the latest in a series of successful professional development programs. It builds on previous sessions that have equipped over 2,000 primary and secondary school teachers with essential skills in digital literacy, new trends in English language, mathematics, science and the application of smart skills to teaching and learning since Governor Bassey Otu’s administration.
