A breakthrough has been achieved in the Rivers State crisis as Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara have reportedly reached a truce. This development follows a closed-door meeting between the two leaders and President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The peace deal, brokered by President Tinubu, includes eight key resolutions aimed at restoring peace and stability in the state. Some of the resolutions include.
Withdrawal of Court Cases: Governor Fubara has agreed to withdraw all court cases instituted against members of the state assembly who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Stopping Impeachment Proceedings: The state house of assembly has agreed to stop all impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara.
Recognition of Martin Amaewhule-led Assembly: The parties have agreed to recognize the leadership of the state house of assembly led by Martin Amaewhule.
Remuneration and Benefits: The remuneration and benefits of the Rivers state house of assembly members and staff will be reinstated immediately.
Independence of Legislature: The lawmakers will choose where to have their sittings without interference from the executive.
Re-presentation of 2024 Budget: Governor Fubara will re-present the over N80 billion 2024 budget to the state assembly with the defected members in attendance.
Reappointing Resigned Commissioners: The governor will resubmit the names of commissioners who resigned to the state house of assembly for re-appointment.
Local Government Administration: There will be no caretaker committee for local governments in Rivers State, and the dissolution of local government administration has been declared null and void.
This development is expected to bring relief to the state and its residents, who have been affected by the crisis. The meeting between Wike, Fubara, and President Tinubu marks a significant step towards resolving the conflict and promoting peace in the state.
