President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has extended formal congratulations to His Excellency, Romuald Wadagni, following his decisive victory in the Republic of Benin’s presidential election held on April 12, 2026.
Wadagni, the country’s incumbent Minister of Economy and Finance, secured an overwhelming 94.05% of the vote, according to provisional results. He is set to succeed President Patrice Talon, whose constitutional two-term limit ends on May 23.
In a personal letter released on Thursday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described the landslide victory as a clear endorsement of Wadagni’s leadership.
“Your victory reflects the trust the Beninese people have placed in your vision and your distinguished record of service as Minister of Finance,” the President wrote.
Tinubu also lauded the government and citizens of the Republic of Benin for the peaceful conduct of the elections, noting that the transition marks a “significant chapter” in the nation’s history.
While noting the deep-rooted cultural and historical ties between Nigeria and its neighbor to the west, President Tinubu emphasized his commitment to regional stability on factors such as bilateral relations, collaborative efforts to stabilize the ECOWAS sub-region and promoting growth within the African Union framework.
Wadagni, 49, ran alongside Mariam Chabi Talata, who will serve as Vice President. His campaign focused on transitioning Benin from a primary industry-driven model to a modern, industrialized, and digital economy.
Closing his message, President Tinubu offered his “unstinting support” to the President-elect, wishing him wisdom and success as he prepares to take office. “Our two nations share a long history of friendship,” Tinubu noted. “I look forward to working closely with your administration.”
