A tense and dramatic scene unfolded at the Anambra State House of Assembly on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, as security operatives escorted a suspended lawmaker, Bernard Udemezue, out of the chamber just moments before Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo was scheduled to present the 2026 budget appropriation bill.
The legislative complex was under heavy security, with contingents of Police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and other agencies strategically positioned for the high-profile event. Inside the chamber, top government officials, traditional rulers, and various stakeholders were seated awaiting the governor’s arrival.
The anticipation was interrupted by the unexpected presence of Bernard Udemezue, the suspended member representing Ayamelum Constituency, who was observed sitting comfortably in the chamber.
The Deputy Speaker, Chukwuma Okoye, along with the member representing Oyi Constituency, Innocent Ojike, immediately approached Udemezue to remind him that his suspension was still in force. Shortly thereafter, security personnel moved in and escorted the lawmaker out of the chamber. Assembly leaders also cleared out his apparent supporters from the gallery.
The Deputy Speaker explained the action, stating that Udemezue had failed to notify the House leadership in writing after the expiration of his three-month suspension, which he termed an “essential requirement for resumption.”
Udemezue, however, vehemently disputed this claim, insisting that he had followed due process and submitted all necessary documents to the House leadership before appearing for the plenary session.
The disagreement escalated into a heated exchange, ultimately leading security operatives to take the suspended lawmaker to the newly built legislative facility, where he is reportedly being held temporarily.
The session eventually proceeded following the removal of Udemezue and his supporters, allowing Governor Soludo to present the 2026 budget.
