Dr. Doyin Abiola, a pioneering journalist, former Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of National Concord newspapers, and wife of the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, has died. Her passing comes 27 years after the controversial death of her husband in detention in July 1998.
Dr. Abiola was a trailblazer in Nigerian journalism, widely recognized as the first female editor of a national daily newspaper. Her leadership at the National Concord was marked by her sharp intellect and editorial courage, establishing her as a powerful figure in the media industry.
Following MKO Abiola’s death, Dr. Abiola maintained a dignified and private life, focusing on raising their daughter, also named Doyin. She largely retreated from public life but remained a respected figure, celebrated for her resilience and accomplishments.
Her death draws to a close a chapter marked by her professional achievements and personal tragedies, as she now joins her husband and two of his other wives, Simbiat and Kudirat, who also preceded her in death.
