The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) convened a critical workshop in Abuja on July 31, 2025, to address the pressing issues of foundational learning and the large number of out-of-school children across the country. The event brought together key stakeholders, including the 36 state Commissioners for Education, to develop a collaborative framework for improving education at the sub-national level.
Attendees included Senator Associate Professor Stephen Odey, Commissioner for Education for Cross River State, and Elder Dr. Esu Effiong Esu, Chairman of the Cross River State Universal Basic Education Board. Other prominent figures at the workshop were Dr. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, and Dr. Aisha Garba, Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).
The workshop aimed to create a structured plan of action to tackle Nigeria’s educational challenges. The discussions involved not only government officials but also development partners like the World Bank and various NGOs, highlighting a unified approach to transforming the nation’s educational landscape. This initiative is seen as a major step toward ensuring more children have access to quality education.
