Abuja, Nigeria – Two members of the House of Representatives today announced their defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Labour Party (LP), respectively.
The defections, which took place in the Green Chambers of the National Assembly were attributed to protracted crises within their former parties.
Hon. Peter Akpanke, representing the Obanliku/Obudu/Bekwarra federal constituency of Cross River State, officially switched from the PDP to the APC. Akpanke cited an unresolved and enduring crisis within the PDP as his primary reason for leaving the party.
Similarly, Professor Paul Nnamchi, who represents the Enugu East/Isi Uzo Federal Constituency of Enugu, defected from the Labour Party to the APC.
Professor Nnamchi also pointed to a significant leadership crisis within the Labour Party as the impetus for his decision to join the ruling party.
The defections further shift the balance of power within the House of Representatives and highlight ongoing internal struggles within Nigeria’s opposition parties.
