Kano: Governor Yusuf Nominates Atiku’s Son-in-Law as Deputy Governor

Governor Abba Yusuf has officially nominated Murtala Sule Garo to serve as the new Deputy Governor of Kano State. The move aims to fill the executive vacancy created by the recent and turbulent exit of the former deputy, Aminu Gwarzo.

In a formal communication transmitted to the Kano State House of Assembly on Tuesday, Governor Yusuf requested the lawmakers to screen and confirm Garo for the position.

The nomination follows the resignation of Aminu Gwarzo on March 27, 2026. Gwarzo’s departure came amidst a high-stakes political fallout with the Governor and a looming impeachment process by the State House of Assembly.

Gwarzo had faced allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office. Following Gwarzo’s resignation and subsequent switch to an opposing political camp, Governor Yusuf alleged that his former deputy had actively attempted to orchestrate his removal from office.

Murtala Sule Garo, 48, is a prominent figure in Kano politics and is notably the son-in-law of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar.

Despite being the Deputy Governorship candidate for the APC in the 2023 elections, Garo is now positioned to join the current administration. His resume includes extensive experience in local government administration, having served as

Commissioner for Local Government and Chairman of Kabo Local Government Area, Chairman of ALGON, Kano State Chapter as well as Special Adviser to the Governor.

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf emphasized that the nomination is rooted in Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution, which grants the Governor the authority to fill a deputy vacancy.

“Following wide consultations with key stakeholders, the Governor has requested the Assembly to grant the necessary approval for Garo’s nomination,” the statement read.

The House of Assembly is expected to begin the screening process in the coming days, a move that political analysts suggest could signal a significant realignment of political forces within the state.
