Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu has, in the last three years, distinguished himself as a purp

oseful leader whose record is steadily earning the confidence of institutions, stakeholders, and ordinary citizens alike. At a time when public recognition and applause is purchased or manufactured by its recipients, his endorsements have come largely as organic responses to visible performance. That is why the stream of awards, honours, and commendations he has received from reputable organizations stands out as a strong argument for a second term in office. It is one thing to be praised by political loyalists; it is quite another to be independently affirmed by diverse and respected bodies who are convinced that a leader is on the right path.
Governor Otu has become a recurring presence on Nigeria’s awards circuit, with recognition from platforms such as Vanguard Newspapers, The Sun Newspaper, Silverbird, and others. He was honoured as the 2024 Most MSME-Friendly Governor, received an honorary doctorate from Modibbo Adama University for his contributions to social development, national cohesion, and humanitarian service, and was also conferred with another honorary doctorate by the University of Calabar. He was further selected as a winner at the 2025 Silverbird Man of the Year Awards for visionary leadership, recognized by The Sun Newspaper for his performance and “season of sweetness” initiatives, and named Independent Newspaper Governor of the Year for Economic Transformation (2025).
Only recently, on March 17, 2026, Senator Bassey Otu, was invested as a Patron of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), recognizing his people-centered leadership and commitment to value-driven governance. Two weeks later, the Broadcasting Organisations of Nigeria (BON) also honoured him with the Tourism and Hospitality Champion Award, while local groups and beneficiaries within Cross River have continued to celebrate his leadership. These are not isolated gestures; they form a broad chorus of approval from observers who are persuaded that the governor is delivering on his promises.
One of the clearest signs of Governor Otu’s administrative maturity is his willingness to devote resources to the rejuvenation of decaying infrastructure rather than chase cheap political glory by commencing new signature projects that might be named after himself. Many governments across the country prefer to abandon inherited projects as though governance is a competition rather than service. Governor Otu has taken a different route. He has shown no fear of completing unfinished projects from previous administrations, and in doing so, he has saved the state billions while still etching his name in gold. That kind of shrewdness is rare. A lesser leader would have sacrificed continuity for ego.
If anyone thought that the ‘People-First’ mantra was a slogan designed for campaign seasons or decorative speeches, we can all now see that it is a governing philosophy that places the people’s wellbeing ahead of the glory of being in office. At the heart of his leadership is the practical meaning of People-First governance: infrastructure development, enhanced security, economic reforms, support for MSMEs, tourism growth, and a visible commitment to improving lives including those of our senior citizens. People do not applaud a leader like this for nothing. They do so because the rhetoric and results on ground align. Governor Otu has shown that true leadership is not measured by the volume of noise around a government, but by the quality of the outcomes it produces. So, his growing list of endorsements is not accidental; it is the natural reward for a man who understands that governance is, above all else, about the people, and whose ego is not inflated by the many recognitions he is receiving.
One of Governor Otu’s greatest strengths is his confidence in the formidable circle of competent lieutenants he has assembled to add sheen to his work. First on that list stands his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey (PhD), a cerebral, well-travelled, versatile and humble armour bearer whose eyes have remained firmly fixed on the ball. Time will fail me to speak about Secretary to the Government of the State, the Chief of Staff, and the impressive array of commissioners and Special Advisers who bring positive energy to this administration. This line-up sends a clear message about the governor’s preparedness to the deliver results the results that the world is applauding today.
For all these reasons, Governor Bassey Otu deserves not only commendation but continued support and another term in office. His record suggests a leader who listens, builds, completes, and delivers. In a political culture that often favours noise over substance, Otu has steadily presented a different model: one rooted in performance, restraint, and people-first vision. If leadership is about leaving a state better than one met it, then the evidence so far makes a strong case that Otu is doing exactly that.
I am writing from the Eko Hotels & Suites, Lagos, venue for the 14th edition of the Vanguard Personality of the Year Awards 2026. The Deputy Governor is representing Governor Bassey Edet Otu, the Vanguard Good Governance Award recipient in recognition of his outstanding achievements in healthcare and infrastructure development in Cross River State. Along with Governor Otu on the honour roll today are 5 other governors: Governor Uba Sani (Kaduna State) for infrastructure and peacebuilding; Governor Nasir Idris, (Kebbi State) for achievements in education; Governor Mai Mala Buni (Yobe State) for rural development and agriculture; Governor Agbu Kefas (Taraba State) for state reforms; Governor Dauda Lawal (Zamfara State) for education, healthcare, and human capital development.
