The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has announced a nationwide tribute to honor Lionel Messi this weekend, following the legendary captain’s retirement from international football.
Under the AFA’s plan, every domestic match across all men’s and women’s divisions and disciplines will pause in the 10th minute of the first half for a minute-long round of applause. The tribute honors Messi’s iconic number 10 shirt and celebrates his historic career with the Albiceleste, which came to a close after Argentina’s 2026 World Cup final defeat to Spain.
“For the upcoming matchdays across all men’s and women’s divisions and disciplines, matches will be paused in the 10th minute of the first half for a minute of applause in recognition of Lionel Messi’s career with the Argentina national team,” the AFA confirmed in an official statement.
In addition to the match-action pause, the governing body has instructed all stadiums equipped with video boards to play a specially prepared tribute montage prior to kickoff. The video will also be distributed across the association’s official social media channels.
The nationwide gesture marks the closing chapter of one of the most celebrated international careers in sports history. Since making his senior debut in 2005, Messi went on to become Argentina’s all-time leading scorer with 125 goals.
Over the course of six World Cup appearances, he set all-time tournament records for both appearances (34) and victories (23). His international crowning achievement arrived in 2022, when he captained Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar, ending the nation’s 36-year wait for the trophy.
Reflecting on his decision to step away, Messi shared an emotional message with fans: “I gave it my all; I have nothing left to give. It was a decision that hurt and still hurts deep down, but I understand that the time has come.”
