The Senate has called

Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong.

on the Federal Government to urgently release funds from the Ecological Fund to tackle the devastating gully erosion and landslides ravaging communities in Cross River South.

The resolution followed a motion moved by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong, representing Cross River South Senatorial District, who drew the attention of the upper chamber to the humanitarian crisis caused by erosion in the district.

Presenting his motion, Senator Ekpenyong noted that gully erosion and landslides have claimed lives, destroyed homes and threatened livelihoods in communities including Atakpa, Edim Otop, Ikot Anwatim, Nyaghasang, Anansa and other vulnerable areas.

He referenced the tragic landslide in Ikot Anwatim in July 2026, which claimed five lives, describing it as a stark reminder of the urgent need for federal intervention.

Following his motion, the Senate resolved to call on the Federal Ministry of Environment, in collaboration with the Cross River State Government and other relevant agencies, to immediately assess the most dangerous sites and commence emergency stabilisation and protective works.

The Senate also urged the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), working with the State Emergency Management Agency and affected Local Government Councils, to provide immediate assistance to bereaved and displaced families with temporary shelter, food and medical support, facilitate safe evacuation and temporary relocation of residents in imminent danger, and strengthen early warning systems.

For a lasting solution, the Senate further urged the Federal Ministries of Environment and Works to prioritise funding for erosion remediation projects in the state, supported by proper geotechnical and hydrological assessments, safe drainage discharge points, qualified design and supervision, and environmental and social safeguards.

In addition, the Senate mandated its Committee on Environment to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of affected sites and existing interventions, engage responsible agencies on funding and implementation, and report back for further legislative action.

Speaking after the resolution, Senator Ekpenyong said he was committed to following through to ensure that relevant agencies take coordinated action to provide emergency relief and implement sustainable erosion control measures.

“Protecting lives, safeguarding communities, and securing the future of Cross River South remain my priorities,” he said.
