In a move to de-escalate rising tensions between Nigeria and Ghana, Nigeria’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Iyom Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, met with Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama. The meeting was held to address recent protests and hostility directed at Nigerian nationals residing in Ghana.
During the “engaging session,” Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu conveyed the concerns of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the people of Nigeria. In response, President Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to peace and assured that both citizens and non-citizens, including their properties and assets, would be kept safe and secure.
President Mahama emphasized the shared history and strategic importance of the Nigeria-Ghana relationship within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He called on all residents to be law-abiding and to avoid inflammatory rhetoric that could incite violence.
“Ghanaians are peace-loving and hospitable people. We share a historic bond with Nigeria,” Mahama stated, urging Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwu to convey this message to President Tinubu. He reiterated his government’s commitment to protecting all residents of Ghana.
