Nigeria and Brazil Bolster Ties, Eyeing $1 Billion Agricultural Initiative…By Eugene Upah

Abuja, Nigeria – Yesterday marked a significant step in strengthening the relationship between Nigeria and Brazil as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu hosted Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin at Aso Villa. Nigeria’s Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, joined President Tinubu in welcoming the Brazilian delegation.

The meeting served to reaffirm the long-standing ties between the two diverse democracies, which are bound by shared values, historical connections, and a mutual aspiration for inclusive, people-driven growth. Discussions focused on tangible avenues for deeper cooperation across critical sectors including agribusiness and food security, trade and industrialization, energy transition, healthcare delivery, innovation, defense, and cultural exchange.

A cornerstone of this revitalized partnership is the landmark $1 billion Green Imperative Programme. This bilateral agricultural mechanization initiative, a collaboration between Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs along with private sector stakeholders, aims to revolutionize Nigeria’s agricultural value chain through technology transfer, capacity building, and the establishment of service centers nationwide.

Both nations also expressed anticipation for Nigeria’s active involvement at COP30 in Belém, Brazil, signaling a commitment to scaling up collaboration on climate action, energy transition, and environmental resilience.

President Tinubu emphasized that the visit signifies a clear transition from goodwill to execution, highlighting potential joint ventures in renewable energy, security cooperation, and creative industry linkages.

Quoting a Brazilian proverb, “Juntos somos mais fortes” (Together we are stronger), President Tinubu underscored Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to fostering resilient South-South partnerships built on mutual respect, shared prosperity, and delivering tangible results for citizens.
