President Bola Tinubu has directed the National Pension Commission (PenCom) to fast-track the rollout of free healthcare for low-income retirees. The directive also includes the immediate implementation of long-overdue pension increases and a minimum pension guarantee for the most vulnerable pensioners.
According to Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu described the free healthcare initiative as a “critical component of social protection and dignity in retirement.”
The President issued the directives following a briefing from PenCom’s Director General, Ms. Omolola Oloworaran.
During the briefing, Tinubu also mandated the PenCom DG to urgently resolve the lingering issues surrounding the police pension. He stressed that police officers, who are dedicated to serving and protecting the nation, deserve to “retire with dignity and peace of mind.”
Ms. Oloworaran briefed the President on several other initiatives, including efforts to protect the value of pension fund assets against inflation and plans to introduce foreign currency contributions. The latter would allow Nigerians in the diaspora to participate in the pension system.
President Tinubu reportedly expressed strong support for these reforms, reiterating his administration’s commitment to “inclusive growth and protection for ordinary Nigerians.”
