A chilling warning has been issued by Dr. Anietie Ikott, an Uyo-based scientist, who cautions that Nigeria could soon face a “very devastating” earthquake alongside other severe climate change-induced disasters.

Speaking in Uyo on Saturday, Dr. Ikott, who is the Chief Executive Director of Anirich Nig. Limited, directly challenged the widespread belief that Nigeria lies outside of a seismic zone. He asserted that recent tremors experienced in Abuja and parts of the South-West states serve as irrefutable evidence that the country is not immune to earthquakes.

“We have witnessed frequent climate change-triggered disasters in Nigeria, such as strong winds and the destruction that goes with it, excessive rainfall and flooding that have led to loss of thousands of lives and properties, and destruction of multi-million naira worth of infrastructure, such as happened in Niger and Borno states recently,” Dr. Ikott stated.

He delivered a stark prediction: “Nigeria will soon experience an earthquake, a very devastating one. We are not immune to earthquakes; they can strike any time, any day”, he concluded.
