Political Motivation Behind Insecurity Surge – Senator Orji Kalu

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, has alleged that the recent surge in insecurity, including abductions, school closures and violent attacks across the country, is “politically motivated” and is primarily the work of politicians.

Speaking on the Channels Television programme, ‘Sunday Politics’, Senator Kalu suggested that the current wave of insecurity follows a ‘routine’ pattern typically observed in the lead-up to general elections, connecting the situation to political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 polls.

Kalu stated that the unrest is part of an effort by political actors to “pressurise government in power,” claiming that some persons are actively recruiting mercenaries to incite violence and destabilise the administration.

“What we are seeing is always routine, something that goes with elections. And when you have an election, people will try to pressurise the government in power for all kinds of things to start happening,” the senator asserted.

He drew a parallel to a previous administration, recalling similar tensions during the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan, suggesting the current situation is rooted in the quest for power.

“The terrorists and the bandits are orchestrated by some members of the international community and local people who really want to destabilise the government. This is politically motivated… These people are actually mercenaries brought by politicians.”

Despite his claims about political sabotage, the Abia senator expressed confidence in the current administration’s ability to address the crisis.

“These people are people centred on destabilising a president that is ready to fight for our economy, that is ready to revamp the economy,” Kalu said, adding that the president has clearly demonstrated that “he is equal to the task.”

The senator’s claims suggest a deep political undercurrent to the nation’s security challenges, which have dominated national discourse for months.
