Why Cross River State Must Reclaim Its Place in Nigeria’s National Politics

Merely joining the All Progressives Congress (APC) and aligning with the “Centre” is not enough. Cross River State must adopt a far more deliberate and strategic approach to its engagement with national politics. For too long, our state has operated on the fringes of federal influence, and the consequences are starkly visible: a dwindling federal presence, reduced political appointments, limited infrastructural development and a gradual erosion of our relevance in the national arena.

While other states routinely organize high powered delegations to advocate for their interests, negotiate opportunities, and secure critical federal projects, Cross River State remains conspicuously quiet. This silence is costly. Development does not gravitate towards passive states; it is attracted by those that boldly articulate their vision, present their needs, and proactively lobby for federal support.

It is time for Cross River to reposition itself decisively.

We must immediately constitute a formal, high-level delegation comprising our foremost political leaders, respected traditional rulers, prominent representatives of the business community, and key stakeholders. This delegation should pay a strategic courtesy visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Such a mission would serve multiple critical purposes:

1. Reinforce our state’s alignment with the Federal Government.

2. Present Cross River’s unique developmental challenges and opportunities directly to the President.

3. Restore the state to the national radar, where pivotal decisions are made.

4. Secure concrete federal commitments for vital infrastructure, enhanced security, and economic revival.

5. Strengthen the political relationships that will deliver long-term benefits to our people.

Cross River cannot afford to be left behind. Our neighbors are advancing because they understand that politics transcends elections, it is about continuous, strategic engagement. If we do not present our case, no one will do it for us. The time to act is now.

A renewed, intentional, and assertive approach to national politics is the only pathway to restoring Cross River State’s pride, influence, and developmental trajectory.

We must rise to the occasion, organize ourselves with purpose, and step forward with courage and unity. Our future depends on it.
