Police say investigation is ongoing; suspect denies wrongdoing
A pastor based in Anambra State has been arrested by security operatives following allegations that he converted about 75 women as “wives” under his church ministry, authorities confirmed on Friday.
The arrest has sparked reactions across the state, with residents and church leaders calling for a thorough investigation into the claims.
According to preliminary police sources, the clergyman was taken into custody after multiple complaints were lodged by family members and community members who alleged that he lured, coerced, or deceived the women into entering “spiritual marriages” with him.
Police said the women, whose ages have not been officially disclosed, were allegedly told that being “wives” to the pastor was a requirement for spiritual deliverance, blessings, or leadership positions within the church. Investigators are working to verify the exact number of women involved and the duration of the alleged practice.
The suspect, whose name and church details are being withheld pending formal charges, reportedly denied the allegations during initial questioning. He is said to have told investigators that the relationships were “spiritual mentorships” and were consensual.
News of the arrest spread quickly in the community where the church is located. Some residents expressed shock, saying the pastor was well-known and had a large following. Others said they had heard rumors about his conduct but never expected such numbers.
Leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Anambra Chapter, said they were monitoring developments and urged the public not to rush to judgment. “We condemn any form of abuse or exploitation under the guise of religion. The law must take its course while we await full facts from the police,” a CAN official stated.
Family members of some of the women allegedly involved have called for counseling and protection for those affected, noting that victims of spiritual or emotional manipulation often face stigma.
The Anambra State Police Command said a full investigation is underway to establish the facts. Detectives are expected to take statements from the women, church members, and other witnesses. Medical and psychological evaluations may also be conducted where necessary.
A police spokesperson noted that no formal charges have been filed yet. “The suspect is assisting with investigations. We are gathering evidence and will charge him to court once investigations are concluded,” the spokesperson said.
Legal experts say if the allegations are proven, the pastor could face charges including unlawful marriage, fraud, sexual exploitation, and abuse of trust, depending on the circumstances and ages of those involved. Under Nigerian law, consent obtained through deception or undue influence is not considered valid.
Anambra State, like other parts of Nigeria, has seen cases of religious leaders being accused of exploiting congregants. Religious affairs analysts note that such cases often involve issues of trust, spiritual authority, and lack of oversight in some independent ministries.
For now, the case remains under investigation. The police have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist the probe.
