President Tinubu Joins Brazil’s Lula at 17th BRICS Summit, Vows Deeper Cooperation…By Eugene Upah

Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, attending the 17th BRICS Conference. The Nigerian leader’s participation began with a productive bilateral meeting with his Brazilian counterpart, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, ahead of the summit.

President Tinubu expressed his pleasure at being back in Rio for the BRICS Summit, noting the warm and fruitful nature of his pre-summit discussions with President da Silva.

During their side meeting before the general summit, both leaders reaffirmed the historic ties and shared aspirations between Nigeria and Brazil. President Tinubu noted his satisfaction with the enhanced cooperation between the two nations over the past two years.

Key areas for further collaboration were agreed upon, including agriculture, technology, oil and gas, energy, trade, mining and extractive industries and industrial development. President Tinubu emphasized that these sectors are vital for achieving inclusive growth and prosperity for both the Nigerian and Brazilian populations.

Underscoring their shared global responsibility, President Tinubu stated that “As two of the largest democracies in the Global South, we share a responsibility to lead with vision, courage, and fairness to shape a more balanced, equitable and dignified global future.”

The 17th BRICS Conference brings together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa with Nigeria’s presence signifying its growing engagement with the influential bloc and major global partners.
