Ebonyi Governor Nwifiru Suspends Dozens of Officials for Missing Government Function

In a drastic move, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has ordered the immediate one-month working suspension without pay for 76 government functionaries across various ministries and departments. The disciplinary action stems from their alleged failure to attend an important government function.

The extensive list of suspended officials, released through a public service announcement by Dr. Monday Uzor, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, includes 25 Honourable Commissioners, 14 Senior Special Assistants, 24 Special Assistants, and 22 Permanent Secretaries.

The Governor’s directive, which took effect yesterday, July 28, 2025, explicitly states that the affected officers are barred from signing any official documents during their suspension. Furthermore, Commissioners on the list have been instructed to hand over their responsibilities to their respective Permanent Secretaries.

The unprecedented mass suspension underscores the Governor’s apparent commitment to discipline and accountability within his administration. While the specific “important government function” that was missed was not detailed in the announcement, the sheer number of suspended officials highlights the seriousness with which the Governor views their absence. The move is expected to send a strong message across the state’s public service.
