Olumo Rock Revenue Surges From ₦3m Yearly to ₦40m Monthly After Refurbishment – Gov. Abiodun

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun says the Olumo Rock Tourist Centre in Abeokuta now generates about ₦40 million monthly, up from ₦3-₦4 million annually before its shutdown and refurbishment.

Speaking Thursday at the commissioning of the 5.5-kilometre Elega–Miliki–Saje–Bode-Olude–Alhaji Sugar Road in Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South LGAs, Abiodun said the iconic site was underperforming due to poor condition and was repositioned to improve tourism value and revenue.

“When I assumed office, Olumo Rock was generating probably about ₦3–₦4 million annually,” the governor said. “When I shut it down and carried out the refurbishment, it began to generate about ₦10 million a week, roughly ₦40 million a month, compared to ₦3 million a year.”

Abiodun described the site as one of Nigeria’s top tourist destinations, adding that it now ranks as probably number one or number two in the country. “If you Google tourist sites in Nigeria, Olumo Rock will be the first to appear,” he said.

The development follows the state government’s earlier reopening of the facility after renovation, with a temporary free-entry policy to encourage visitation, promote cultural tourism, and boost local commerce around the centre.

The government later ended the free-entry window due to overcrowding and safety concerns, saying the surge of visitors required stricter access management. The state has since moved to concession the tourist centre to a private operator to ensure improved management and sustained revenue generation.
