The Prime Minister of Saint Lucia, Philip Pierre, has condemned a politically motivated group for what he described as the “vilification and denigration” of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu following his recent visit to the Caribbean island.
Speaking during the country’s 2025 Emancipation Day address, Prime Minister Pierre came down hard on critics, stating that their actions were a demonstration of the “harmful effects of the legacy of slavery: self-hate and a readiness to accept African people and their descendants as inferior.”
President Tinubu’s visit to the island nation recently was aimed at establishing formal relations with Saint Lucia and other members of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States. However, the trip was met with criticism from a section of Nigerians.
Prime Minister Pierre reaffirmed his country’s readiness to implement the memorandum of understanding signed between the two nations, underscoring the commitment to the new bilateral relationship despite the political backlash.
