When Buhari Took Power 1983, Some Govs Were Jailed For Giving Contract To Party Faithful – Abdullahi

Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary of the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC), has spoken out on what he describes as growing misuse of public funds by state governors.

According to report by NIGERIAN TRIBUNE on Saturday May 16 2026, Bolaji recalled Nigeria’s Second Republic and the military era under Muhammadu Buhari in 1983, noting that some governors were jailed in 1984 for financial offences, including the award of contracts to political associates involving relatively small sums.

Abdullahi contrasted that period with the present, alleging that some state governors are now deducting funds from their federal allocations to support presidential campaign activities.

He described the alleged practice as unacceptable and a serious departure from standards of accountability in public office.

He said, “In the Second Republic when Muhammadu Buhari took over power in 1983, some governors were sentenced to many years in prison in 1984 just for awarding contracts of a few millions to party faithful, and for using government money allegedly against the prescription of the law.”
