LAGOS: AIG Recovers 4M Extorted from Complainant, As Police Inspector Faces Trial

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Alagbon, Lagos, has ordered an inspector to refund ₦4 million (approximately $2,700 USD) that was allegedly extorted from a complainant. The inspector is now facing an internal trial.

According to a press release from the FCID Annex, the directive from AIG Margaret Ochalla followed an internal investigation prompted by a viral tweet alleging extortion and human rights violations.

The investigation, carried out by the CP X-Squad, led to the arrest of Inspector Kalu and a Point of Sale (POS) agent. During questioning, Inspector Kalu admitted that the complainant had a previous petition filed against them for allegedly “terrorizing his community.” The complainant also confessed to identity theft but was released on bail. The POS agent’s testimony added another layer of complexity, as they claimed the complainant had initially requested the ₦4 million and then later returned it.

Despite the conflicting details, AIG Ochalla ensured the full recovery of the ₦4 million, which has since been returned to the complainant. Inspector Kalu is currently undergoing an internal “Orderly Room Trial,” which is a form of disciplinary proceeding within the police force.

AIG Ochalla emphasized the police force’s commitment to accountability and professionalism. She encouraged the public to continue reporting misconduct through official channels, reiterating that the FCID Annex has “zero tolerance for corruption and abuse of power.”
