Senate Plenary Disrupted As Abdul Ningi Brings Traditional Spear To Chambers

Akpabio: “Even what is on his neck is like a snake”

Proceedings in the Nigerian Senate were briefly disrupted on Thursday after Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi, representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, appeared in the chamber with a traditional spear, raising security concerns among lawmakers and chamber officials.

The incident occurred during plenary when the object was noticed on the Senate floor. This immediately triggered discussions on security protocols and the appropriateness of bringing such items into the legislative chamber.

As the matter drew attention, Senate President Godswill Akpabio made an observation before ruling on the issue, saying: “Before I rule on it, I just want to observe that even what is on his neck is like a snake.”

Security personnel were reportedly instructed to remove the spear in line with established procedures. However, Senator Ningi objected, insisting he would personally take responsibility for removing it from the chamber.

“I will take this instrument. I don’t want the sudden attack. There is no way this instrument will be given to the sergeant. I will take it away myself,” Ningi said.

The senator further explained that the spear held significant cultural and personal value to him, arguing that those seeking to take possession of it did not fully understand its importance.

“So leave me. I will take it away. You don’t know the importance of this and what it means,” he added.

Senate officials later moved to address the situation and ensure compliance with chamber security procedures.

The episode has sparked fresh debate on decorum, security, and cultural expression within Nigeria’s legislative chambers.
