The Nigeria Football Federation has handed Eric Chelle a fresh contract extension with the Super Eagles and appointed him head coach of the Olympic Eagles, consolidating both senior and U23 teams under one technical structure.
The double appointment, confirmed by NFF officials on Tuesday, is designed to create a seamless player pathway from the U23 side to the senior national team ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Chelle’s new Super Eagles deal runs through December 2027, with an option to extend to 2028 if Nigeria qualifies for the Olympics and reaches at least the AFCON quarter-finals. As Olympic Eagles coach, he will oversee team selection, training camps, and qualification campaigns, while working closely with his Super Eagles assistants.
Speaking after the announcement, Chelle said continuity was the key motivation. “This structure allows us to build a team with a clear identity. Players coming from the Olympic Eagles will already understand our philosophy when they step up to the Super Eagles. That saves time and builds confidence,” the Malian tactician stated.
NFF President Ibrahim Gusau said the federation wants to end the cycle of disjointed planning between age-grade teams. “For years our U23 team would prepare separately and players would have to adapt again with the Super Eagles. Coach Chelle will bridge that gap,” Gusau noted.
Chelle took charge of the Super Eagles in early 2025 and guided the team through the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. With AFCON 2027 qualifiers starting later this year and Olympic qualifiers for LA 2028 beginning in 2027, the NFF opted to avoid a separate U23 coach.
The move mirrors models used by France, Spain, and Senegal, where the senior coach influences the youth setup to ensure tactical and cultural alignment. For Nigeria, it means players like Samuel Chukwueze’s younger contemporaries and NPFL stars can be groomed early.
Former Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa welcomed the decision: “It’s good for the boys. If you know the coach’s system from U23, you settle faster with the big team.”
Some analysts, however, caution about workload. Managing both teams means Chelle will juggle World Cup/AFCON qualifiers with Olympic prep. The NFF says additional technical staff will be appointed to support the Olympic Eagles during joint camps.
Chelle’s immediate task is to submit a provisional Olympic Eagles squad for a training tour next month. He will also name his Super Eagles squad for the June international window.
With one coach, one philosophy, and a longer contract, the NFF is betting that stability at the top will translate to results on the pitch. For Nigerian fans, the hope is that this “Eagles family” approach produces a team that peaks in 2027-2028.
