The South South Development Commission (SSDC) has commenced urgent steps towards the reconstruction of the collapsed bridge in Calabar South, Cross River State, following an inspection of the site and consultations with the Cross River State Government and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
Led by the Managing Director, Ms. Usoro Akpabio, the SSDC delegation assessed the extent of the damage and the impact on affected communities. The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the state government and relevant agencies to provide an accelerated, sustainable, and coordinated response.
Speaking during the inspection, the SSDC Managing Director emphasised that the safety and welfare of affected residents remain a priority, noting that the Commission’s intervention marks the beginning of sustained efforts towards recovery, reconstruction, and long-term resilience.
The delegation subsequently met with the Cross River State Government, where the Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Peter Odey, welcomed the Commission’s intervention and expressed the state government’s readiness to collaborate with SSDC and other development partners to address critical infrastructure challenges.
The SSDC team also inspected other erosion affected areas within Calabar to identify locations requiring urgent intervention and preventive measures.
This intervention underscores SSDC’s commitment to responsive leadership, strategic partnerships, emergency intervention, infrastructure development, and sustainable growth across the South South region.
