Sunderland FC have turned down Chelsea’s first bid for experienced midfielder Granit Xhaka, sources close to the club have confirmed, with the Black Cats valuing the Switzerland international well above the opening figure submitted by the London side.
The Premier League newcomers are understood to have received an initial proposal from Chelsea earlier this week as Enzo Maresca’s side look to add depth and leadership to their midfield options ahead of the transfer deadline.
However, Sunderland swiftly rejected the offer, making it clear that Xhaka is not for sale unless a bid matching their valuation arrives.
According to club sources, Chelsea’s opening offer was in the region of £12m plus add-ons. Sunderland are believed to be holding out for a fee closer to £20m, reflecting Xhaka’s influence since joining the Stadium of Light last summer and the two years remaining on his contract.
Xhaka, 32, was a key figure in Sunderland’s promotion campaign and has since become a central part of Regis Le Bris’ midfield setup in the Premier League. His passing range, composure and experience were cited as major reasons the club are reluctant to sell.
A Sunderland spokesperson said: “Granit is an important player for us on and off the pitch. We have rejected Chelsea’s opening approach because it does not reflect his value to this squad.”
Chelsea are in the market for a seasoned central midfielder to provide cover and competition following injuries and a busy schedule of Premier League and European fixtures. Xhaka’s Premier League experience and ability to operate as both a No.6 and No.8 made him an attractive target.
It remains to be seen whether Chelsea return with an improved bid before the window closes. The Blues are also reported to be monitoring other midfield options across Europe.
Those around Xhaka say the midfielder is fully focused on Sunderland’s season and has not agitated for a move. The former Arsenal captain signed a three-year deal with the Black Cats in 2024 and has spoken publicly about enjoying his role as a senior leader in a young squad.
With the deadline approaching, Sunderland’s stance appears firm: any club wanting Xhaka will have to meet their price.
