…A Significant Step Towards Decentralized Power in Nigeria
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has officially transferred the regulation of Abia State’s electricity market to the newly formed Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority (ASERA).
This landmark decision positions Abia as one of the pioneering states to assume full control over its electricity regulation, a direct outcome of the Electricity Act 2023.
As part of this transition, the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has been mandated to establish a distinct company specifically for power distribution within Abia State, with a deadline of 60 days to complete this process.
This move is widely regarded as a significant stride towards the decentralization of Nigeria’s power sector, with the overarching aim of enhancing electricity supply and efficiency at the state level.
The handover connotes a new era for power governance in Nigeria, granting states more autonomy in addressing their unique energy needs.
