Yesterday we were inundated with several reports across the internet of an alleged accident that occurred along the calabar – Itu highway which claimed 17 lives.
Several news organizations such as Daily Posts, Cross River Watch amongst others carried the story, including pictures of the alleged accident.

As the Federal Representative covering the area where the reported tragic incident was said to have occurred, I released a message to the general public condoling on the alleged loss.
I then made efforts to investigate further and offer any forms of assistance, we have now established that the reported tragedy of yesterday involving 17 lives is fake news.
It is unsettling to see how easily misinformation can spread and its attendant negative consequences.
While we are immensely grateful to God Almighty that no lives were lost, we do not take such matters lightly. The thought of losing 17 lives was deeply distressing, and I must admit I was distraught upon encountering the report online yesterday.
While the usual media mercenaries have decided to politicize what could have indeed been a tragic situation, I remain committed as your representative to engaging constructively with the Federal Ministry of Works and the contractors currently working on site to ensure safety as well as ensuring that the project is delivered within timelines.
Thank you.
Signed
Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong
