Argentina President Javier Milei will not be in attendance for the FIFA World Cup final against Spain, opting instead to watch the match from home in adherence to a personal superstition he credits for Argentina’s deep run in the tournament.
According to sources close to the Casa Rosada, the President revealed the origin of the ritual dates back to Argentina’s quarterfinal clash with Switzerland. Milei said he briefly removed his jacket during the match after feeling overheated, only to see Switzerland score moments later.
Convinced the two events were linked, he immediately put the jacket back on. Argentina went on to recover in the match and Milei has since refused to remove or change the jacket on matchdays.
Aides say the President believes breaking the routine now could jinx Argentina’s chances of lifting the trophy again, and has decided the safest contribution he can make to the national team is to maintain the ritual exactly as it has been – from home.
The Presidency has not announced any alternative official representation at the final, with Milei reportedly planning to watch the game privately with close staff and family.
Neither FIFA nor the Spanish Royal House has commented on his absence.
