Reps Demand Evidence Of Payment To Indigenous Contractors From Office Of The Accountant General

The House of Representatives has asked the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation to furnish parliament with evidence of 2.4 Trillion Naira paid to local contractors for project implementation as approved by the Federal Government.

Deputy Speaker of the House who is also the Chairman, Ad-hoc Committee on Budget implementation, Benjamin Kalu, made the request after a routine meeting with the Association of Indegenous Contractors of Nigeria in Abuja, as part of legislative intervention to address lingering protest by the contractors.

Kalu in a statement, notes that the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation has affirmed that the bulk of the approved 2.4 trillion has been paid to the contractors, leaving an outstanding of 160 billion naira.

He further notes that the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun has approved additional 760 billion Naira for warrant and cash backing for the remaining months, bringing the total to about N3.1 trillion.

The Deputy Speaker however emphasized the need for thorough scrutiny of the process to ensure that payments were made for legitimate and completed projects.
