75-Year-Old Nile Crocodile Nicknamed ‘Osama’ Blamed For Death Of 80 Villagers

A 75-year-old Nile crocodile nicknamed ‘Osama’ has left a trail of fear and death in a lakeside village where it is blamed for killing and devouring about 80 people.

The 16-foot-long predator reportedly terrorized residents for decades in lake Victoria at a village named Luganga in Uganda, with locals recounting chilling tales of how it operated with unusual cunning and boldness.ga

According to accounts from the community, the crocodile would lurk at the edge of the lake and snatch children as they fetched water in buckets, while fishermen lived in dread of it gliding silently beneath their boats and deliberately capsizing them before attacking.

The most deadly period was said to be between 1991 and 2005, when the giant reptile’s relentless attacks wiped out one-tenth of the village’s entire population, throwing the community into mourning and forcing many to abandon fishing and other water-related activities that were their main source of livelihood.

Residents described the crocodile as unusually intelligent and evasive, managing to escape several attempts to capture or kill it, which further fueled myths and fear around its presence. It was named ‘Osama’ after Osama bin Laden, owing to the terror it instilled.

While wildlife experts note that Nile crocodiles are among the most dangerous predators in Africa and responsible for hundreds of human fatalities annually, the scale of deaths attributed to this particular animal has made it one of the most notorious man-eating crocodiles ever reported.

Authorities are yet to confirm if the animal has finally been captured or eliminated, as tales of its reign continue to haunt the village.
