FINLAND: Turku is set to put E-scooters off the streets on weekends.

  1. The City of Turku is set to prohibit the use of rental electric scooters during weekend nights.

This decision comes in response to the new regulations established by a micro-mobility law that took effect in June this year.

Micro-mobility encompasses transportation via bicycles, light electric vehicles, or motor-assisted bicycles. Moving forward, rental service providers will be required to secure a ‘micro-mobility license’ from local municipalities.

The conditions of this license will empower municipalities and cities to manage and supervise various aspects, including the operating hours, parking, and speed limits of rental vehicles.

Turku, along with Helsinki and several other cities, is in the process of creating their licensing framework for rental electric scooters. The objective is to finalize this framework by fall and to implement it at the beginning of the upcoming year.
