‘Our Country is Being Led by Idiots,’ Says Rep. Ilhan Omar in Response to President Trump

U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota has sharply criticized President Donald Trump and his Republican allies, stating that their recent comments prove the United States is “being led by idiots.”

Her remarks followed a social media post by President Trump, in which he attacked Omar, who is of Somali descent, for “telling us how to run our country.” Trump’s post was part of a larger backlash against Omar, which was intensified after a narrowly defeated attempt in Congress to censure her.

The censure resolution, introduced by Rep. Nancy Mace of South Carolina, was a response to a retweet by Omar that critics interpreted as her blaming conservative activist Charlie Kirk for his own death. Kirk, a close ally of Trump, was assassinated on September 10. The resolution was voted down in a close 214–213 vote.

In his social media post, Trump wrote, “Somalia is consistently ranked among the world’s most corrupt countries… All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America! What SCUM we have in our country, telling us what to do, and how to do it.”

During an appearance on “The Weekend Prime,” Omar dismissed Trump’s comments, describing him as “always unhinged, always derailed, always creating chaos.” She accused the president of being obsessed with immigrants and mocked his call for her impeachment, pointing out that members of Congress cannot be impeached.

Omar argued that the rhetoric from Trump and his allies “expose themselves for how stupid they are,” which she called “embarrassing for us as a country.” She specifically cited comments suggesting she could be deported, a legal impossibility for an American citizen.

“What that displays for not just Americans but folks on an international platform is that our country is being led by idiots, and that is not something that we would be comfortable with,” she said, concluding that she feels “great sadness that these are the kinds of people representing us.”
