In a historic milestone that highlights the exceptional brilliance of Nigerian youths, 16-year-old Osasere Okundaye has officially become the youngest individual in Nigeria to qualify as a chartered accountant.
Okundaye achieved this record-breaking feat after successfully passing the highly demanding professional examinations of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). Her success shatters the previous national record set in 2022 by Jonathan Adewale, who attained the prestigious certification at the age of 17.
The historic achievement quickly drew widespread praise across the nation. On Monday, June 29, 2026, the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, issued a statement warmly congratulating the teenager and commending her exceptional discipline.
“I heartily congratulate Miss Osasere Okundaye on her outstanding achievement of becoming Nigeria’s youngest Chartered Accountant at just 16 years of age,” the Minister stated.
“This remarkable milestone is a testament to the power of hard work, discipline, resilience and an unwavering commitment to excellence.”
Olawande added that Okundaye has distinguished herself as a “shining example of the limitless potential of Nigerian youth,” proving that with the right focus and support, young Nigerians can shatter barriers and set global standards.
The ICAN professional certification is widely regarded as one of the most rigorous and intellectually taxing professional pathways in Nigeria. Typically pursued by university graduates and seasoned financial professionals after years of tertiary study, the multi-tiered examination process tests advanced knowledge in Strategic Financial Management, Advanced Audit and Assurance, including Corporate Reporting.
Conquering these subjects at just 16 years old puts Okundaye in an elite class of global academic prodigies. The Minister of Youth Development also extended deep appreciation to her parents, teachers, and mentors, noting that their sacrifices, guidance and belief in her capabilities were fundamental to this monumental success.
Reaffirming the federal government’s dedication to youth growth, Olawande stated that Okundaye’s triumph reinforces the ministry’s confidence that the future of Nigeria is incredibly bright in the hands of its determined young citizens.
