Troops of the Forward Operation Base (FOB) Malumfashi, under the 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army, have successfully recovered 529 rustled livestock following a high-stakes encounter with terrorists in the Kafur Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The operation, which took place on February 7, 2026, was led by Lieutenant Colonel MM Isa. It was prompted by “credible intelligence” regarding the movement of bandits around the Kasuwan Sabo axis.
According to preliminary reports, the criminal gang is believed to have infiltrated from neighboring Zamfara State. The group was allegedly led by Idi Abasu Aiki, identified as the younger brother of the notorious bandit kingpin, Ado Aliero.
Upon spotting the military advance, the terrorists opened fire in an attempt to escape. However, the troops responded with superior firepower, initiating a “hot pursuit” that stretched between Burdugau and Unguwan Matau villages.
During the chaos of the retreat, the terrorists attempted to use the stolen animals as shields. While the military successfully routed the criminals, 14 cows were unfortunately killed in the crossfire.
Following an extensive sweep of the area, the military confirmed the recovery of 290 Cows, 238 Sheep, 1 Donkey and 1 Motorcycle.
In a statement released by Captain Abayomi Adisa, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 17 Brigade, it was noted that no casualties were recorded among the Nigerian troops, highlighting the “professionalism and combat effectiveness” of the unit.
The recovered animals have already been handed over to local authorities for verification. The process was supervised by the Chairman of Kafur LGA, Honourable Suraju Nature, and the Divisional Police Officer, SP Aminu Salihu, to ensure the livestock are returned to their rightful owners.
Major General Paul Koughna, General Officer Commanding 8 Division, has commended the gallantry of the troops. He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to “Operation FANSAN YAMMA,” vowing to sustain aggressive operations to deny criminal elements any freedom of action in the North West.
Troops remain on high alert, dominating the general area with intensified patrols.
