President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
The announcement, contained in a Statehouse press release signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, notes that Aina will succeed the outgoing Registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose two-term tenure officially expires on July 31, 2026.
At just 39 years old—turning 40 in July—Professor Aina is set to make history as the youngest registrar to ever lead the nation’s tertiary admissions body.
Aina, a Professor of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, is widely regarded as a systems expert. He previously made waves in academia by becoming one of Nigeria’s youngest professors in his field.
Interestingly, his journey with JAMB has come full circle; Aina cut his teeth at the agency during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year, where he gained foundational insights into national admissions and data-driven processes.
An alumnus of the University of Kent, UK, where he earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Systems Engineering, Aina also holds an MSc in Internet Computing and Network Security and a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University. He is also a graduate of the Lagos Business School’s Senior Management Programme.
With over 15 years of experience operating at the intersection of technology, policy, and public-sector reform, Aina has frequently advised both federal and state governments on digital transitions. He has also served as an ICT and examination integrity consultant to major educational bodies, including the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB).
The Presidency indicated that Aina is expected to leverage his extensive background in digital infrastructure to build upon the successes of his predecessor.
“President Tinubu expects Professor Aina to bring to bear his vast experience, knowledge and practical insight into the operations of the Board, to take the critical educational organisation beyond the laudable heights achieved by his predecessor,” the statement read.
Aina holds professional memberships with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), and international bodies such as the IEEE and IET. He is expected to fully assume office on August 1, 2026.
